MNX19, the Dutch national event on media literacy was very well attended in the beautiful building of Beeld & Geluid (Media Park, Hilversum). I gave a talk about the goals of the Scientific Council in which I emphasized the importance of close links between scientific knowledge (knowing that) and practical knowledge (knowing how). Research on media literacy in the Netherlands is rather well attuned to practical issues, no ivory tower type of thinking. An argument I made earlier in my column. Still, the Council aims to invest in the relation between research and the professional domain of media literacy. Advocating the quest of scientific research was a bit of a challenge today, because Rosanne Hertzberger defended her provocative statement that ‘we’ rely too much on science.
