On 11 December 2018, I was installed as the chairman of the new Scientific Council of the Dutch Media Literacy Network. The council aims to catalogue research with respect to media literacy and digital literacy in The Netherlands in order to identify gaps in our knowledge. A major step forward is to expand the concept of media literacy (‘mediawijsheid’) beyond children and youth to also include the critical capacities of adults. Really necessary in this day and age of fake news. For me, it is an honor to chair the council. Together we will stand on the shoulders of giants, that is, the researchers who already contributed a lot to understanding media literacy (and how to improve it).
