August 2015 was wonderful for our holiday in South Africa, seeing son Luca after 5 months, but also difficult. My friend Mariette, who just turned 54, passed away. I have many fond memories of her and our time together, but these cannot fill the gap. South Africa as such was rich in contrast as well. Walking through the Langa township in Cape Town was an enriching experience. I know the apartheid background of townships very well, but still it was different to see how the old regime left it traces. Our guide shared many positive experiences, showed positive developments, but left no doubt about the effects of current corruption. Streetlife (cars, clothing, shopping bags) in other parts of Cape Town showed that social inequality nowadays crosses ethnic boundaries: all groups have their rich and poor.
